Off the Gireed is a series of furniture pieces which explore the narratives of material, process, place and cultural context that are embedded in a an everyday object and re-contextualized to create new meanings and uses. Off the Gireed reinterprets the abundant and widely used palm fiber crate seen in the Egyptian street as simple fruit and vegetable crate to chicken coop to transportation vessel. The new series collages the palm fiber with other materials and seeks in so doing, to reinvigorate the traditional artisanal craft of palm crate making, using a renewable material source and drawing appreciation to this craft's wabi-sabi aesethtic of imperfection, transience and incompleteness.
I created a test prototype series of products including bookshelves, coffee and side tables, a pouf and a lamp. The line was awarded both a Red Dot and aGood Design Award in 2011.
